Between a Dream and a Nightmare
Between a dream and a nightmare explores the difficulty of holding two emotional states, one which aspires to a positive, inclusive future and another which is incensed by colonial injustice. I am always aware that these two positions are wrestling with each other in my subconscious.
The bucolic scene presented in this installation is not quite what it appears. The large scale charcoal drawing hovers between a hazy idyllic memory and an imagined forest fire, while the eyes commonly used in taxidermy processes peer out at those who accept the invitation to rest. The use of indigo dyed elements is a nod to the way in which this plant was used in colonial oppression and environmental exploitation in India.
