Between a Dream and a Nightmare
Between a dream and a nightmare explores the difficulty of holding two emotional states, one which aspires to a positive, inclusive future and another which is plagued by colonial injustice. These two unreconciled positions wrestle in the subconscious, producing moments of rupture.
The bucolic scene presented in this installation is not quite what it appears. A large scale charcoal drawing hovers between a hazy idyllic memory and an imagined forest fire, while taxidermy eyes peer out at those who accept the invitation to rest.
The indigo dyed elements serve to remind us of the way in which this plant was used in colonial oppression and environmental exploitation.
